When La Réunion was decolonized in 1946, the island had full employment. From the end of the war until the late 1960s, this was the norm. Agriculture and industry provided many jobs. The increase in population was used solely in the interests of the former colonial power. Every year, thousands of young people were given a one-way ticket to France, to help enrich the country.
