The Reunionese Communist Party alerts the two La Reunion MPs in the European Parliament
22 July 2024, by
In a press release released on April 22, the Reunionese Communist Party asks Younous Omarjee and Marie-Luce Brasier-Clain, Réunion MPs in the European Parliament, to act to exempt La Reunion Island from the additional tax raising the price of electric cars manufactured in China , and to obtain Europe to support the SIDELEC Plan of installations of photovoltaic charging stations which will lower the price of charging.
The European Treaty makes it possible to adapt European policies for La Reunion Island, enabling MEPs to act.
China, led by a Communist Party, is the world’s leading producer of electric cars. Its system allows it to have lower production costs than in Europe. The European Union has decided that this advance in terms of competitiveness constitutes unfair competition. Electric vehicles manufactured in China are already taxed at 10%, with an additional tax of up to 38% added.
The European Union denounces subsidies paid to the Chinese automobile industry. However, there is no economic sector in Europe that does not benefit from public aid. The restructuring of European industry has been largely subsidized. Public aid paid to private companies in Europe amounts to billions of euros.
The Reunionese Communist Party (PCR) asks the two Reunion MEPs to act to exclude Reunion from the application of this surcharge. Reunion does not have an automobile industry to protect, the Reunionese have the right to benefit from the best quality-price ratio offered by the globalization of the economy.
Furthermore, the ecological transition relies in particular on the electrification of the vehicle fleet. However, the price of electricity, a basic necessity, has increased by 43%. The political context in France made it possible to avoid an additional increase planned for August 1.
SIDELEC in La Reunion is implementing a development plan for photovoltaic charging stations to power electric cars. Using the sun will reduce your energy bill. More than 1,500 terminals will be installed in La Reunion. Support from the European Union will help accelerate this energy transition plan.
For the PCR, it is up to the two Reunionese MPs in the European Parliament to act to obtain European funds to make this plan a reality.
The exclusion of Réunion from the application of the surcharge on Chinese electric cars and aid for the installation of photovoltaic charging stations may fall within the framework of Article 343 of the Treaty of the European Union. This article provides that the policies decided by the EU can be adapted to Reunion Island. It is this provision of European law which has enabled the Reunion sugar industry to benefit from significant subsidies, and the State to increase direct aid paid to planters of sugar cane.
