Emmanuel Macron has chosen his new Prime Minister

Communist Reunionese Party reaction to the appointment of Michel Barnier as Prime Minister

5 September 2024, by Reunionese Communist Party

More than a month after France’s parliamentary elections, a resigned government continued to dispatch current affairs. On September 5, the President of the Republic chose his new Prime Minister. He is Michel Barnier, of the Les Républicains (LR) party. LR is the 3rd largest parliamentary group after the Nouveau Front Populaire and the Mouvance présidentielle. The PCR reacts to this decision in a press release published on September 5, 2024.

Michel Barnier Prime Minister

On Thursday September 5, 2024, Michel Barnier, a member of the “Les Républicains” party, was appointed Prime Minister, replacing Attal. He saves Macron from a disaster that began when he announced the dissolution of the National Assembly on the evening of the European elections on June 9. The legislative elections held on June 30 and July 7 had given a relative majority to the NFP (Nouveau Front Populaire) coalition, as the outgoing presidential majority had not been strengthened. It took President Macron 2 months of conciliation to arrive at this appointment.

Everyone is now waiting for the general policy speech to give their verdict on his chances of surviving all the contradictions in French society, in particular the pensions dossier, European policy, peace in Ukraine, institutional reform, Caledonia and so on.

For its part, the Reunionese Communist Party reiterates the urgent need to draw up a consensual La Reunion Island project capable of resolving the shortages of jobs and housing, the high cost of living and taxation, regional cooperation and climate risks, social cohesion and cultural enhancement, and so on. This project will be submitted to the government for approval of a program law covering a minimum of 10 to 15 years. In a spirit of empowerment, the drafting of the project must be carried out by the Reunionese, with the participation of the country’s driving forces. The PCR calls on La Reunion Island’s parliamentarians to join forces to achieve a result within the first 100 days of Michel Barnier’s term of office.
