Chagos Archipelago sovereignty dispute
India Supports Mauritius’ Claim to Chagos Islands
18 July, by
Mauritius’ claim to sovereignty over the Chagos has once again received support from India through its Foreign Minister, Dr. Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, currently visiting the sister island: "India will continue to provide its continued support for Mauritius, in line with its core position on decolonization and support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of nations”.
Dr Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, Foreign Minister of India, is currently visiting Mauritius. During this stay, he reiterated India’s position regarding the occupation of Chagos by the United Kingdom. The archipelago housing the Diego Garcia military base is claimed by Mauritius. Based on an opinion from the International Court of Justice, the UN General Assembly passed a resolution ordering the British to stop administering Chagos, and to facilitate the return of Chagossians who were expelled from their country to cause of the construction of the Diego Garcia base.
This position is highly anticipated. India is regaining its place among the world’s largest economic powers. India is also a major military power and possesses the atomic bomb. Its navy crisscrosses the Indian Ocean and regularly stops at Reunion and Madagascar. The construction of the Agalega base in Mauritius will allow it to have a new point of support for its fleet.
With France based in Reunion Island, the United States and the United Kingdom based in Diego Garcia, and Pakistan, India is one of the nuclear powers of the Indian Ocean.
Dr Subrahmanyam Jaishankar declared this Tuesday July 16:
“In view of our deep and enduring relations, Mr Prime Minister, I would like to assure you once again today that on the issue of Chagos, India will continue to provide its constant support to Mauritius, in accordance with its position principal on decolonization and support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of nations”.
